Bodrum is not one place but a peninsula of villages, each with its own character, connected by a road that runs around the coast. The town itself is dominated by the Castle of St Peter and a marina; the villages spread west and north. Villa architecture is regulated — white walls, flat roofs, limited height — which gives the whole peninsula a visual coherence you do not find on the rest of the coast. The season is longer here than further east, and a substantial year-round community means restaurants stay open.

Where to stay in Bodrum

Yalıkavak

The upmarket end, with a superyacht marina and designer shops. Villas are large and modern; prices reflect it.

Türkbükü and Gölköy

North-facing bays with wooden sun decks built over the water. Popular with Istanbul weekenders, busy in August.

Gümüşlük

A fishing village on the west coast with sunset restaurants built along the shore and the submerged ruins of ancient Myndos offshore. The quietest of the well-known villages.

When to go

The season runs April to November, longer than the Lycian coast. August is intense — traffic on the peninsula road can double journey times. June and September offer the same sea with a fraction of the crowds.

Getting there

Bodrum-Milas Airport (BJV) is 35–50 minutes from most villages, with strong international connections in summer. A car is useful, but the peninsula road gets congested in August; villas within walking distance of a village are worth considering.

Local tips

Journey times on the peninsula are longer than the map suggests in high season.
Gümüşlük's restaurants are best booked for sunset, an hour before the actual time.
The Bodrum–Kos ferry makes a straightforward day trip; take passports.
Many villas sit on terraced hillsides with steps — worth checking if anyone in the group has mobility needs.
